Currently in the private forestry sector in Ireland, there is just 5.69% of the forests certified.
This is very low by European standards.
A recent report by COFORD A Study on Private Forest Certification in Ireland estimated that in the 5 year period from 2022 to 2026, almost 2000 forest owners, principally farmers will need to have their forests certified in order to maintain certification thresholds.
This represents almost 3 million cubic meters of timber.
A significant task which needs immediate action by Government.
